David Šohaj Minařík, a representative of the startup Myco, presented at Meet the Makers 18 innovative approaches to using mycelium in the packaging industry and the possibilities for its recycling and environmentally friendly disposal. Myco, founded three years ago, essentially uses waste materials that, combined with mycelium, make it possible to create products that can compete with traditional materials, such as polystyrene.
The video recording is in Czech.Mycelium as an alternative to plastics
David described the potential of mycelium to replace many plastics, especially in the packaging industry. Mycelium products can turn waste into useful and fully biodegradable materials.
Collaboration and awards
Myco recently received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award, a recognition of the quality and innovation of the materials it produces. He also described the collaboration with the Czech Academy of Sciences and other partners, which allows Myco to keep improving and developing its technologies.
Technological innovation and challenges
The startup focuses on developing technologies that will enable mass production of mycelium materials at low cost. David stressed that to be price-competitive, production must be as efficient as possible, including its energy consumption and use of human resources.
Questions from the audience
During the discussion, several questions were asked about the scalability of production, the biotechnological aspects of mycelium, the economic sustainability of the project and the options for joining mycelium materials.
Challenges and future direction
David concluded the talk with an overview of plans for further development and scaling up production capacity, which should lead to wider market adoption of mycelium materials and strengthen their position as a sustainable alternative to traditional materials.
This talk offered a fascinating look at the potential of mycelium in modern industry and showed how innovation can lead to significant changes in the way we approach manufacturing materials and the environment.
