Science Study as a Game – Petr Tureček (Faculty of Science, Charles University) and Daniel Krejčí (Parametric Designer)
How does inventing work and how do people build on the knowledge of previous generations? Why can’t evolution be captured by simple mathematical formulas, and how does the approach to developing practical and aesthetic objects differ?
Evolutionary biologist Petr Tureček did not find satisfactory answers to these and other questions in any of his predecessors’ work. So he had no choice but to roll up his sleeves and start his own research.
With the help of parametric designer Daniel Krejčí, he created an experiment, which will involve not only data collection, but also a good dose of fun. Participants are asked to create an object that beats its two most successful predecessors in one of the given parameters. They get to test their skills and take the result home. And where better to find enough creative people of all ages and interests than at Maker Faire? The experiment started on 10 June 2023 in Prague and then travelled with the festival to other Czech cities.
The video recording is in Czech. The talk was recorded at Meet the Makers 16, held on 10 May 2023. We organised the event in collaboration with the initiative Make More. We thank Petr and Daniel for their time and for sharing their experience.
