At the 19th Meet the Makers evening, we had the opportunity to welcome another inspiring guest, who introduced us to the world of autonomous robots and their use in greenhouse farming. Our guest was Vratislav Beneš, who is behind the development of an autonomous robot designed to monitor and predict crop growth in modern greenhouses. The FRAVEBOT project combines advanced technologies and knowledge systems that could fundamentally change the way fruit and vegetables are grown in controlled environments.
The video recording is in Czech. At the start of the presentation, Vratislav took us through the world of greenhouse farming, where everything is governed by precise environmental parameters. The robot he presented is designed to monitor plant growth in this carefully controlled environment, identify potential problems and help agronomists prevent damage caused by pests or diseases.
An autonomous robot for greenhouses
FRAVEBOT is equipped with 32 cameras and other sensors that can collect huge amounts of data on every plant in the greenhouse. This data is key to the early detection of problems such as pests or diseases, which can spread within a few hours and destroy a significant part of the harvest. The robot helps minimise these risks and keep crops healthy and productive.
Prediction and optimisation
A key aspect of the project is the ability to analyse data and predict plant growth patterns. This allows agronomists not only to react quickly to problems but also to optimise the whole growing process. These technologies make it possible to achieve higher yields and better quality, which is key to the sustainability and economics of greenhouse farming.
Challenges and the future
Although the technology has advanced, the robotisation and digitalisation of agriculture still face various challenges. One of them is integrating these technologies into the day-to-day running of greenhouses, where modern machines still meet traditional ways of working. As Vratislav explained, one unexpected problem was that people often do not understand how to work (together) with robots properly, which can lead to unnecessary complications.
Conclusion
The presentation of the autonomous greenhouse robot was a fascinating example of how modern technologies can transform agriculture. The project proves that innovation can bring fundamental change even to traditional fields such as crop growing.
We look forward to the next Meet the Makers evening and to more inspiring stories and projects.
