Meet the Makers

A Taste of Projects from the Largest Agriculture-Focused FabLab – Luc Hanneuse (AgriLab)

At the beginning of June, PrusaLab welcomed another guest of our series of inspiring networking evenings, Meet the Makers. This time we were joined by Luc Hanneuse from AgriLab in France, who shared his fascinating projects and innovations in the world of agriculture. Luc’s presentation was full of practical examples of work by AgriLab members. For those who could not attend, here is the recording and a summary of the key points of his talk.

The video recording is in Czech.

AgriLab can even fit a tractor

Luc opened his presentation by introducing AgriLab, which is located on a large university campus in France. The size of the space allows work on large projects right inside the building – you can even drive a big tractor in.

Precision agriculture and RTK GPS

One of the main topics of Luc’s presentation was precision agriculture and the use of RTK GPS with an accuracy of 1 cm. Such a system is usually very expensive, but at AgriLab they teach farmers how to build their own antenna and use this technology for a fraction of the price. This allows farmers to take very precise measurements, optimise their farming practices and the associated costs.

Open source and Fab Academy

Luc stressed the importance of open-source innovation and knowledge sharing. AgriLab is part of the global programme Fab Academy, which supports peer learning and the rapid creation of new projects. People from all over the world meet at AgriLab to collaborate on innovative projects such as an autonomous robot for agricultural use, built by a student with no previous knowledge of electronics.

From idea to implementation

One of the strongest moments of Luc’s presentation was a showcase of the projects created at AgriLab every day. For example, an autonomous farm cart, which can recognise people and carry up to 100 kg, or a tractor autopilot system made using 3D printing. These projects not only attract the attention of large industrial companies but also inspire others to start innovating themselves.

Challenges and funding

Finally, Luc talked about the challenges of funding such a large project. AgriLab draws on a variety of sources, including EU grants, support from agricultural banks and university funds. It also offers private services and is planning to launch a new programme, Agri Academy, which will focus on teaching and sharing knowledge in agriculture.

Luc showed us how innovation and technology can contribute to more sustainable and efficient agriculture. His enthusiasm and willingness to share his knowledge are an inspiration to us all. We look forward to the next Meet the Makers evening and to more inspiring stories and projects that move us forward.
