The inspiring evening Meet the Makers 18 featured Viktória Žigmundová from Myceelab, a student project run under the auspices of UMPRUM, who presented innovative ways of using mycelium in architecture. Myceelab, made up of architecture students, focuses on the experimental exploration of mycelium as a sustainable material capable of reducing CO2 emissions in construction, which account for roughly 40% of global emissions.
The video recording is in Czech. An experimental approach to mycelium
Myceelab takes an artistic view of mycelium and explores its potential not only in architecture but also in design. The team is working on several projects, including combining mycelium and ceramics with the use of 3D printing.
Sustainability in construction
Viktória stressed the importance of organic materials in reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry. Myceelab is looking for ways in which mycelium can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for construction.
Research and applications
Current projects include the development of mycelium panels and blocks that can serve as structural elements or insulation material in interiors. These projects are presented in academia and at international forums (ASCAAD in Amman, Jordan), where the team won an award for its innovative work.
The future of mycelium in architecture
Viktória’s team is also exploring the potential of mycelium to detoxify soils and support biodiversity in affected areas. There is also discussion of biophobia and the need to accept natural decay as part of our environment.
This talk opened up new perspectives on mycelium, not only as a material but also as an inspiration for more sustainable and responsible approaches in architecture and construction. The Myceelab project, led by UMPRUM students, is not primarily after commercial success; instead it focuses on experiments and research in an academic setting. In this way, the students contribute to breakthroughs that have the potential to change how we perceive the materials around us.
