Logistics can make or break success. We discussed this issue with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ludek-drnec-b4106a1\/\">by Lud\u011bk Drnec<\/a><\/strong>, the CEO <strong>DHL Express Czech Republic<\/strong> and ours <strong>mentor<\/strong> in the programme <strong>PrusaLab Hardware Accelerator<\/strong>. How can it help startups? They have well-thought-out manufacturing and financing, but they lack a distribution strategy. \u201eOh, that'll sort itself out somehow...\u201c is, according to him, a common but dangerous approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1\ufe0f\u20e3 Logistics is not just delivery \u2013 it starts right at the raw materials stage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not just about how to get the finished product to the end customer, but also <strong>where will the raw materials come from and how will they get into production<\/strong>. Drnec points out that many startups underestimate the reality of supply chains. Yet, if you are importing components from Asia, you have to deal with <strong>delivery times, customs duties, certification and transport routes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2\ufe0f\u20e3 Don't forget about the sales strategy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start-ups often underestimate not only logistics, but sales itself. \u201e<strong>Who you will sell it to, how you will sell it and how the customer will get hold of it<\/strong>, are questions that need to be asked right at the beginning.\u201c If you are targeting globally, you will need to deal with export, and therefore also<strong>\u00a0customs regulations, tax aspects and distribution partners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3\ufe0f\u20e3 Are you packing properly? Maybe not.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hardware startups often don't worry too much about the quality of packaging and the protection of their goods. Drnec warns: \u201e<strong>The last thing you want is to approach your first customers and deliver a damaged product to a third of them.<\/strong>\u201cDHL Express helps start-ups not only with transport, but also by recommending the right packaging solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4\ufe0f\u20e3 Batteries \u2013 a frequent stumbling block<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your product contains <strong>lithium batteries<\/strong>, you should be careful. Transport regulations vary according to volume, packaging method, and destination. \u201e<strong>In some cases, you may find that air transport is not possible at all and you have to look for alternative routes.<\/strong>\u201cDHL Express offers consultancy in this area to help startups avoid unexpected complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5\ufe0f\u20e3 Sustainability: A competitive advantage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drnec highlights the growing emphasis on <strong>green transport<\/strong>. DHL Express is introducing <strong>synthetic aviation fuel (SAF)<\/strong>, which significantly reduces the carbon footprint of transport. Start-ups looking to expand into Scandinavia, Japan or the USA should take sustainability seriously, as customers and investors are increasingly demanding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final advice: Don't be afraid to outsource<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201e<strong>I understand that startup founders want to handle everything themselves, but some things are more efficient to outsource \u2013 for example, logistics or accounting.<\/strong>\u201csays Drnec. His recommendation?
